Guantánamo Cell Tour
In 2008, Amnesty International toured a replica of a Guantanamo cell throughout America. Huge thanks to all the volunteers and visitors who made the tour a great success. Amnesty International has long campaigned for the closure of Guantanamo and against the practices and policies it embodies - unfair trials, torture and other ill-treatment, rendition and unlawful detention. In November 2008 Amnesty International issued recommendations to President-elect Barack Obama challenging him to Counter Terror with Justice. Within his first two days in office, President Obama signed executive orders to close the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay within one year; suspend trials by military commission; close all CIA secret detention centres and ban the use of “enhanced” interrogation techniques that amount to torture and other ill-treatment. President Obama made very important moves in the right direction, but recently he endorsed military commissions and indefinite detention--and rejected an independent commission of inquiry into torture. We must change his mind. Ensure that President Obama closes Guantanamo the right way » |
