Increasing the knowledge and understanding of the issue of child soldiers
Introducing the Blood Diamond Curriculum Guide
Pulling from the book, Innocents Lost, which provides a personal and
powerful examination of the lives of child soldiers, this curriculum guide introduces
students to the use of children in armed conflict and how it violates international
human rights law. Using examples from the book, including Afghanistan and Colombia,
students will synthesize their knowledge of the issue by connecting elements
of the selected readings to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)
and the Optional Protocol on Children and Armed Conflict and other aspects related
to address the problem.
