Ideas and resources for economic activism on Darfur
Take our online action. Add your voice to encourage 10 of the top US investment companies with holdings in the Big 4 oil companies operating in Sudan to use their influence to help ensure UNAMID is deployed quickly.
Send a letter. Download the Oil in Sudan Fact Sheet and a sample letter. If you're concerned that your university endowment, pension fund, or mutual fund has holdings in the Big 4, send the letter to the appropriate investment manager. Even if they already screen out companies operating in Sudan, they still probably hold our target investment companies. Urge your investment manager to send the sample letter to the top US-based investment companies with holdings in the Big 4. You can also press your city council, university Board of Trustees, or other promient organizations to send similar letters! Be sure to check our Progress Report before sending your letter to see if a particular company has already responded or been removed from our list.
Use shareholder activism. You don't need to hold any stock to use shareholder activism! You can help generate support for our Sudan shareholder resolutions, which will be voted on between March and May 2009. Find a large investor that you're connected to, such as your school's endowment or a city or state treasury or pension, and urge them to support our shareholder resolution* on Sudan. We acheived a lot of change with our 2008 shareholder activism campaign. Stay tuned for more information on firms that we will file resolutions with in 2009. Sign up for SHARE POWER, Amnesty's grassroots shareholder activism campaign to receive monthly updates about our campaigns.
*In 2008 we filed shareholder resolutions with 6 firms: Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, T. Rowe Price, Citigroup, Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Chase. Visit our company progress report to read the resolutions, learn more about how particular firms responded, and which ones are not responding at all. Download a sample shareholder resolution.
