Don't let Dow close the door on Bhopal!

What is a shareholder resolution? Learn more »

Read the resolution on Bhopal submitted by shareholders, which Dow rejected.

Last fall, a group of Dow stockholders filed a shareholder resolution expressing their concerns about Bhopal, with the intent of raising the issue at the company's annual shareholder meeting. But with the support of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company rejected the resolution in an attempt to keep Bhopal off the agenda. But we won't let that happen!

In addition to sending an online letter to the President and CEO of Dow, Andrew Liveris, you can write letters to the shareholders of Dow, alerting them to Dow's moral and legal obligations, as well as the shareholder risks associated with the Bhopal disaster. Ask shareholders to demand the truth from Dow.

To learn more about the socially responsible investment community's opinion on Dow and the Bhopal disaster, read a fact sheet prepared by Boston Common Asset Management in anticipation of the resolution vote.

Here's what you can do to help!

1) Write a letter to your university
All universities and colleges operate investment portfolios, and it is likely that many own stock in Dow Chemical (DOW). If you are a student, you can contact your university or college and request information about their investment holdings. If they own stock in Dow, you can join with other campus groups to demonstrate about Bhopal and draw attention to the fact that Dow is keeping information from investors. 2) Write a letter to institutional shareholders, such as your city or state's pension fund or treasury
Several institutions, such as public employee and/or teacher pension funds in your state or city, and your state and city treasuries, hold large investments in Dow Chemical (DOW), and their opinions carry a lot of weight with a company's Board of Directors. Often, investors such as these are susceptible to public pressure, particularly when it comes from constituents in their area, so we encourage groups to focus on investors in their geographic location. 3) Write a letter to your mutual fund company
You may own stock indirectly through mutual funds. Portfolio managers for mutual funds have the responsibility for selecting these stocks and we need to make sure they have the full story about Dow Chemical (DOW), and that they use their significant clout with companies like Dow to press the company for change.
