Artists For Amnesty

Artists for Amnesty is a group of committed artists who take action to stop human rights abuses and save lives. You can play a crucial role in working with Amnesty International to secure the release of prisoners of conscience, prevent torture and other abuses, and promote human rights. Your role as an artist-activist will be inspirational and invaluable in helping to deliver a powerful global message.

Storm 

Hannah Maynard, prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, is leading a trial against a former commander of the Yugoslavian National Army who is accused of the deportation and later killing of dozens of Bosnian-Muslim civilians. When a key witness commits suicide, it looks like the case will unravel, however Hannah refuses to give in.

 

Tibet: Beyond Fear 

This award wining film by Michael Perlman highlights a remarkable true story of courage and the power of positive thinking. With an opening by Richard Gere, Tibet: Beyond Fear documents Ngwang, a Buddhist nun and Badgro, a Buddhist monk, who at the ages of 13 and 20, led freedom demonstrations against the Chinese repression in Tibet. They were arrested and horribly tortured but inspired by the Dalai Lama found a way beyond fear and have even forgiven their former tormentors.

 

War Child

It is a testament to the human ability to overcome the most unspeakable circumstances, as well as an indictment of how inhumane humans can be to one another. The Secret Policeman’s Balls is the collective name for a legendary series of hilarious, irreverent and groundbreaking benefit shows staged to raise funds for Amnesty International. Beginning in 1976, the Balls featured the cream of Britain’s comedians and an astounding line-up of international musical talent. The shows have been credited by numerous people as being the inspiration for many of the high-profile charity events of the last 30 years, including Live Aid.

 

War Child  

A Young Man On A Mission "Left home at the age of seven/one year later I'm carryin' an Ak-47." For hip hop artist Emanuel Jal, a former child soldier in Sudan's brutal civil war, these lyrics are hardly empty posturing. They are the bitter reality of a young man who was "forced to sin" but determined to "never give up and never give in."  The film traces the story of an Afghan taxi driver who died in U.S. custody at the Bagram detention facility in Afghanistan and examines the U.S. government's illegal interrogation and detention policies and practices in the "war on terror."

The Visitor

Actor and filmmaker Tom McCarthy’s follow-up to his award winning directorial debut The Station Agent, Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) stars as a disillusioned Connecticut economics professor whose life is transformed by a chance encounter in New York City. When his college sends him to Manhattan to attend a conference, Walter is surprised to find a young couple has taken up residence in his apartment. Victims of a real estate scam, Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian man, and Zainab (Danai Gurira), his Senegalese girlfriend, have nowhere else to go. In the first of a series of tests of the heart, Walter reluctantly allows the couple to stay with him. Artists for Amnesty is proud to support this touching portrayal of the complex issue of immigrant rights.

In Search of Hope

In Search of Hope: The Global Diaries of Mariane Pearl introduces readers to 12 brave, determined women who are true agents of change in their communities. The limited-edition run of In Search of Hope features more than 200 previously unpublished images from Pearl's travels and updates on the women since they were first profiled in Glamour magazine. Blood Diamond

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly, and driected by Edward Zwick. Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, it tells the story of two African men whose fates become intertwined in a quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives.

Human Trafficking

Amnesty International created a new downloadable organizing kit -- based on the mini-series, Human Trafficking (Lifetime TV, October 24th and 25th, 9 PM EST/PST) -- that you can use to bring human rights education to your community.
