US Training of Foreign Military Forces
The United States government trains approximately 100,000 foreign police and soldiers from more than 150 countries each year. One of the purported benefits of this training is that it instills respect for human rights and democratic institutions. Yet the vast majority of US training courses do not include specific instruction in the human rights or humanitarian law obligations that soldiers must obey. Unfortunately, many of the government forces the US has trained have poor human rights records.
Red countries indicate where the US provided training in FY 2001, per the US government's 2001 report on foreign military training. This map is based on unclassified information only and does not include training of or with forces from NATO countries.
