Seeking 1-2 New Members for Amnesty International USA's Military, Security and Police Transfers Working Group
AIUSA's Military, Security and Police Transfers Working Group (MSPWG) seeks to curb human rights abuses that are made possible via the international arms trade. The group focuses in particular on the export of weapons and military training from the United States that contribute to violations of human rights. The MSPWG is building an activist network and developing campaign actions on gun running, arms transfers and foreign military training. Currently, we are working closely with AIUSA Membership Mobilization and Government Relations staff on a joint AI-Oxfam-IANSA campaign to help stem the flow of small arms to human rights violators and promote an international treaty to regulate the arms trade.
Military, Security and Police Transfers Working Group members come from different backgrounds and have a range of expertise and experiences related to the weapons trade. We are currently looking to add one or two experienced AI members or others with relevant background to this volunteer leadership group. Ideal candidates for the current openings will have some mix of the following skills:
- strong working knowledge of the dynamics of the international arms market;
- strong working knowledge of US military aid, police aid, and/or weapons transfer programs;
- practical knowledge of weapons systems;
- creative campaigning skills;
- experience mobilizing activists.
Volunteer leaders are asked to donate about 10-15 hours per month and make a commitment of two years to this position. Appointments will begin in summer 2006. Individuals who wish to apply should send a cover letter and a resume or CV to the address below. In the letter, please describe why you want to work with AIUSA's Military, Security and Police Working Group and highlight your relevant qualifications and experience. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2006.
