Archives Timeline

1966: Amnesty International founded in USA as AIUSA.

1992: University of Colorado at Boulder (CU-B) curator Bruce Montgomery founds the Human Rights Initiative (HRI).

1994: AIUSA signs contract to join HRI, begins collecting and depositing human rights materials.

1999: Human Rights Watch joins the Human Rights Initiative, making it perhaps the largest human rights archives in the world. The AAAC meets at University of Colorado at Boulder.

2000: CU-B decides to discontinue development of HRI; AAAC studies and interviews twelve potential archiving institutions.

2005: Columbia's Vice Provost James Neal visits the AIUSA Urgent Action Office in Colorado and the HRI at CU-B. Shortly afterward AIUSA signs archiving contract with Columbia University.

2006: AIUSA's materials and dozens of small individual collections, are moved from CU-B to Columbia in spring and summer of 2006 after review of materials in Colorado by Columbia's archiving staff. David Magier is appointed director of the Columbia University's Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research (CHRDR).

2007: Columbia University's CHRDR organizes a launch conference October 4-6, 2007 attended by researchers, archivists, and members of the depositing human rights organizations including members of AIUSA's Archives Advisory Committee (AAAC).
