Lobby Day to Stop Violence Against Women a Success!
A big thanks to all who participated in our national lobby day, on Monday, April 28th, to stop violence against women! More than 200 activists visited over 100 congressional offices to ask lawmakers to support the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA). This new legislation calls for funding to support locally led efforts to reform practices and change social attitudes that condone violence against women and girls, better address this violence in humanitarian assistance programs, and trains lawyers and police on how to better deal with domestic violence cases.

AIUSA 2008 Focus Plenary Speaker: Moazzam Begg
![]() |
The 2008 AGM will be featuring, live via video telecast, former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Moazzam Begg. He will be sharing his experiences, and speaking out against torture and unlawful detainment.
Moazzam Begg was born in Birmingham to secular Muslim parents. Moved by the plight of the Afghani people, in 2001, Begg travelled to Kabul with his family to start a school for basic education, and to provide water pumps. When the allied attack on Afghanistan began in October 2001, Begg and his family moved to Islamabad in Pakistan for safety. It was there that he was seized in January 2002 by Pakistani police and CIA officers.
Hooded, shackled and cuffed, he was taken first to the US detention facility at Kandahar, then on to Bagram, and finally to Guantanamo Bay. In all he spent three years in prison, much of it in solitary confinement, and was subjected to over three hundred interrogations, as well as death threats and torture, including witnessing the killings of two detainees. He was released on January 25, 2005 without charge though he received no compensation or apology.
Moazzam Begg is spokesman for the Human Rights organization, Cageprisoners, with whom he has been working since his release from Guantanamo Bay in 2005. He regularly lectures around the world speaking about the effects of the 'War on Terror' and detention without trial. He is also author of, Enemy Combatant: A British Muslim's Journey to Guantanamo and Back. It is the first book to be published by a former Guantánamo Bay prisoner.
Lobby Day: Stop Violence Against Women
Join us on Monday, April 28th to lobby congress and help stop violence against women! We need everyone's participation to put pressure on Congress and make sure that effective legislation is created. Find information on the day's events
At least one out of every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. In Europe, domestic violence is the major cause of death and disability for women aged 16 to 44. In the United States, a woman is raped every 6 minutes; a woman is battered every 15 seconds. Rape of women is widespread in armed conflicts such as Colombia and Darfur. Trafficking of women has become a global phenomenon where victims are sexually exploited, forced into labor and subjected to abuse.
Murders of women in Guatemala, Russia, India, and other countries often go uninvestigated and unpunished. The experience or threat of violence affects the lives of women everywhere, cutting across boundaries of wealth, race and culture. In the home and in the community, in times of war and peace, women are beaten, raped, mutilated, and killed with impunity. As long as violence against women continues, the promise to humanity of the Universal Declaration cannot be fulfilled.
