Human Rights Concerns
Since the election in 2009 of Mohammed Nasheed, human rights in Maldives has improved dramatically. President Nasheed, himself a former Prisoner of Conscience tortured by the previous president, has put human rights at the forefront of his agenda.
However, there looms a disaster that has the potential to affect literally everyone in the tiny archipelago (the capital of the Maldives is on an atoll 1 sq km and does not rise much higher than sea level) and that is climate change. Even a small rise in the sea level will destroy the cluster of islands and force everyone to seek out a new country. To highlight this concern, President Nasheed and his cabinet held a cabinet underwater as a way to show what his country faces if sea levels rise.
