Libya Human Rights
Overview
According to the Amnesty International 2008 Annual Report, the following is a list of human rights concerns in Libya:
• Freedom of Press
• Freedom of Expression
• Ill-treatment and detention of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants
• Safety of at least seven Libyan Guantanamo Bay returnees
• Death Penalty
• Discrimination against women in law and practice
• Impunity for past human rights violators

Amnesty International Distressed by Death of Libyan Government Critic Fathi el-Jahmi
Amnesty International mourns the death of Libyan government critic Fathi el-Jahmi May 21 in an Amman, Jordan, hospital following his transfer from detention at the Tripoli Medical Center in Libya.
"Fathi el-Jahmi was a towering democracy activist and fearless government critic who never allowed himself to be silent. He is an inspiration to many and his message of freedom of speech and governance lives on," said Zahir Janmohamed, Amnesty International USA advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa.
