Human Rights Concerns
Strained relations between Burkina Faso and neighboring, war-torn Cote d'Ivoire have spurred human rights abuses of prisoners accused of association and/or supplying information to Cote d'Ivoire in regards to a number of issues, hindering all peace efforts.
The government of Burkina Faso accused the (NUDD) National Union for Democracy and Development of providing information to Mauritania, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea to under-mind the country. Amnesty International received reports of instances of incommunicado detention for members of the NUDD suspected of connections with neighboring countries.
There has been no reported progress in the investigations into the extra-judicial executions that left some 106 people dead during 2001-2002, nor has there been any progress in the murder of investigative journalist Norbert Zongo in 1998, and the largest human rights organization in Burkina Faso, the (NBDHP) Burkinabe Movement for Human Rights reports several deaths, arbitrary detentions, assisted exiles under suspicion by the government's security forces.
