How was the death penalty abolished?

In 1852 the Rhode Island death penalty was abolished through legislation. In 1872 it was reinstated for "murder committed by a life prisoner." In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated that law through its Furman v. Georgia ruling (Source: Keep the Death Penalty out of Rhode Island)
