Urge
Governor Ryan to Commute All Death Sentences in Illinois
After a two-year study of the death penalty in Illinois, the Governor's Commission
on Capital Punishment has established that the states capital punishment
system is fundamentally flawed and that, in effect, everyone currently on death
row has been convicted and sentenced under an inherently defective system.

Help Save Amina Lawal from Death by Stoning
Amina Lawal, a 30 year-old Muslim woman, was sentenced to stoning to death by
a Shari'ah court at Bakori in Katsina State in northern Nigeria. Amina allegedly
confessed to having had a child while divorced. Pregnancy outside of marriage
constitutes sufficient evidence for a woman to be convicted of adultery according
to the new Shari'ah-based penal code for Muslims, introduced in Katsina State.

Amnesty International's State Death Penalty Abolition
Coordinators (SDPACs)
AIUSA has at least one SDPAC in each state. These volunteer leaders serve as sources
of information and guidance about the death penalty in your state. Each SDPAC
is knowledgeable on the history of the abolition movement in the state and knows
the current political climate and activists in the movement. If your state has
the death penalty, your SDPAC will have experience with organizing vigils and
clemency campaigns, lobbying, conducting workshops, and working with media. If
your state does not have the death penalty, the SDPAC will be able to tell you
about conferences and workshops and ways to keep your state free of the this ultimate
human rights abuse. Please contact
the Program to Abolish the Death Penalty for contact information for your State
Death Penalty Abolition Coordinator.
